UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation revealed several fascinating future games, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a unique game where a young woman containing several human souls inside her needs to flee from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can take over at will, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed footage, much of the action unfolds within a creepy hospital, though additional clips depict the protagonist navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Elements that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are unique to every individual."
The central gameplay loop revolves around controlling whichever soul emerges at any given moment. However, these identities will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Choice
At first glance, UN:Me displays noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities inhabiting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body is rightfully them," notes a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player have deduced a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or hide the truth, it is very easy to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
