UK Extends Methanol Poisoning Warning Roster with An additional 11 Nations
British authorities has placed 11 more destinations to its travel advisory list about the dangers of methanol contamination from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
This updated advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after evidence showing "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol toxicity.
Just last month, officials had previously placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the standing register, after a number of serious events including the tragic loss of six travelers in Laos in 2024.
Travelers are being advised that as little as small amounts of methanol can result in permanent eye damage or loss of life within 12 to 48 hrs.
Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Used?
Toxic alcohol is a harmful chemical typically employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and thinner. This substance is not intended for drinking.
While it is inherently formed during the production of alcoholic drinks, commercial firms lower it to minimal, harmless amounts for ingestion through the refining procedure.
However in some countries, it is illegally mixed into spirits to cut costs, and as it is flavorless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to detect.
Authorities' Recommendations for Travelers
Foreign Office minister the minister said that each tourist should be aware of the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"While having drinks in foreign countries, stick to well-known venues and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or complimentary drinks," Falconer said.
"Should anything feels off, like a headache that's way worse than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention immediately."
The complete register of nations listed as posing a risk of methanol contamination presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
