Adrian Dunbar will return their characters in the popular crime series

The acclaimed crime series Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, announced by the BBC.

An upcoming six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.

Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together soon."

The previous series concluded in 2021 with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been circulating ever since, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

The seventh season begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to tackle corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to become a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

In a statement, the creator commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a new season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I'm excited to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is returning! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the unit return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and looking forward to those mercurial twists and turns."

Show History

Line of Duty premiered in 2012 and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring notable actors such as Lennie James.

Broadcasters has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and producers indicated at the time there were no intentions for further series.

Nevertheless, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now being produced.
