The Golden State is Fully Free of Drought for the First Time in a Quarter Century.

For the first time in 25 years, not a single part of California is facing dryness. This landmark event arrives after challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that worsened blaze threats and pressured its enormous farming industry.

An Update Indicates An Absence of Drought

The latest assessment from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that the entire state is free from dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that replenished major reservoirs like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their historic averages.

“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” stated a climate scientist.

Following Powerful Weather to Wet Holidays

Achieving this status involved severe and lethal winter storms that struck the state in the not-too-distant past, leading to widespread flooding, electrical failures, and tragic losses. While those storms helped ease the drought, they did not eliminate it.

As late as late December, pockets like Modoc County were considered abnormally dry. Subsequent downpours at the onset of 2026 finally erased those remaining dry spots.

A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern

But, authorities caution that drought-free conditions does not mean having no water worries. Latest data of the mountain snow accumulation indicate it is only about 70% of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which supplies about a third of the state's water as it thaws later in the year, is a key piece for future water availability. Water officials stress that it is premature to determine the outlook for the coming year.

“The trend we’re looking at right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” explained a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to increase by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor is entirely green, the next challenge is to maintaining this positive water situation throughout the rest of the year.
