The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer responsible for a series of unforgettable images favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his defined forms and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
His passing follows shortly after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Lasting Legacy
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price headed for London in the early 1960s to study at the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he began designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger sported during The Rolling Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He launched his own brand in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on supermodel Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the bridal gown Price designed for her for her nuptials with Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A long-time collaborator of David Bowie, Price created the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his expert craftsmanship in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the UK's fashion authority.
In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, which included a number of outfits for her tour of the United States following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London just last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.
