Last year, star Jude Law stated he had no concerns about backlash for portraying Vladimir Putin in a cinematic adaptation. The movie, though, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed image circulated by official channels that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment instead of a challenge.

The Crafted Strongman

For years, the Kremlin and the country's pop-culture machine have collaborated to forge a made-to-measure persona of the president. This character is an infallible strategist without age or mistakes, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a Russian James Bond who always knows beyond what he shows.

Screen-Based Support

One recent example is a television show released last October, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. Its main character is a fictional security officer selected by fate to “rescue” the nation from chaos. Although the character's name a different name, the implication is unmistakable: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

International depictions often end up buttressing this identical story rather than debunking it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the political machinery around him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, Putin is presented as having been picked by powerful oligarchs to steady the nation because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. They visit him and practically plead him to take the top job. His response is that he would prefer to rule from the shadows, seeking enduring influence.

This narrative is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, none of this ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

No one ever begged Putin to take the job. The position was effectively a selection process with many candidates. Central to this process stood an influential oligarch from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country in practice.

• His list featured several politicians, including a reformer later murdered and a security service director.
• Per an expert who researched Putin’s biography, the future president merely met the required parameters: loyal, from the intelligence world, and politically neutral.
• A businessman familiar with the events stated the key criterion was manageability and faithfulness, not leadership.

Constructing the Spy Legend

Analysts concur that the image of him as a master operative was built after the fact. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany fall apart under examination. Fundamentally, he handled paperwork and technical tasks, a low-level clerk not engaged in field operations.

Curiously, the shift to depicting him as a “spy” may in part have been inspired by Daniel Craig’s debut as James Bond. His harder version prompted Russian media and online audiences to draw visual parallels with their leader. Edited images swapping Craig’s face with his surfaced on Moscow streets, feeding the growing tendency to see him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

With Jude Law, an actor popular with viewers there, the authorities will not miss the chance to portray this choice as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's omission of public dissent, the political rivals, or key figures in the story, despite covering recent years, is a pleasant bonus for state propaganda.

Domestically, the president is frequently an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. He is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. Now, he finally acquires a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently echo the very myths it might seek to question.
