Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
