2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are anything but new to the gaming landscape. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. However, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are serious Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To understand this rise, I performed a deep dive into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data paint a clear picture: a marked increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is also visible elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming seems especially strong.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs offer natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Innovative Systems: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues enable a host of innovative control schemes.

Several the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.

When these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be witnessing a true frog gaming renaissance.
